The lathe is an ancient tool, dating at least to the Egyptians and, known and used in Assyria, Greece, the Roman and Byzantine Empires.

The origin of turning dates to around 1300BC when the Egyptians first developed a two-person lathe. One person would turn the wood work piece with a rope while the other used a sharp tool to cut shapes in the wood. The Romans improved the Egyptian design with the addition of a turning bow. Early bow lathes were also developed and used in Germany, France and Britain. In the Middle Ages a pedal replaced hand-operated turning, freeing both the craftsman's hands to hold the woodturning tools. The pedal was usually connected to a pole, often a straight-grained sapling. The system today is called the "spring pole" lathe . Spring pole lathes were in common use into the early 20th Century. A two-person lathe, called a "great lathe", allowed a piece to turn continuously (like today's power lathes). A master would cut the wood while an apprentice turned the crank.

During the industrial revolution the lathe was motorized, allowing wooden turned items to be created in less time and allowing the working of metal on a lathe. The motor also produced a greater rotational speed, making it easier to quickly produce high quality work. Today most commercial lathes are computer-operated allowing for mass-production that can be created with accurate precision and without the cost of employing craftsmen.

PSI Woodworking LCSIXW High Speed Steel Wood Lathe Chisel Turning Set, 6-Piece PSI Woodworking LCSIXW High Speed Steel Wood Lathe Chisel Turning Set, 6-Piece

Nice set of Chisels. I turn smaller items on a Jet lathe and use my smaller chisel set more. But the large chisels have worked well for bowls and smaller jobs as well. This set wasnt the most expensive or the cheapest out there, but the quality is good! For the average user this is a great set of chisels that will not disapoint.

I have just started turning wood, mainly bowls, and needed a couple tools in this set...mainly a small bowl gouge, decent parting tool and bowl scraper. I already had a similar roughing gouge included, so it's useful too. The skew chisel...probably just me...haven't got knack of it yet and I occassionally use the spindle gouge but already had one. Ok, that being said, I had no problems with the case being cracked...but don't care, as I don't keep the tools in a box...I keep them where I get to them fast. They seem to keep their edge a little less than the Sorby gouge I have, but not a huge difference here. All in all, a great set to get started, especially making bowls, though you really need a larger bowl gouge (1/2" min) to really be steady with making anything bigger than say 4" diameter bowl or so. As others have said, it's a great way to get started using the tools and deciding where to put extra money improving on any of them. Good example, is I'll definitely invest in a beefy scraper...no substitute for having a good heavy cross section to prevent vibration when reaching inside a bowl with a scraper. Aside from that..I'll probably continue to use these tools for quite a while, only having to invest in perhaps some unique items such as the curved vessel scraping/turning tools to get inside really well on vessels. Again...very good starting set, a good value.

Do not expect the box to make it thru shipping, Amazon could do a better job of packing but a little glue cures the box problem. Now the LATHE TOOLS are a very good beginners set. Quality tools good enough for getting into wood turning without spending $200 just to see if you like it. NOTE: They really do need to be honed to a fine edge.

These aren't quite Sorby's but heck one Sorby chisel could cost you what this whole set costs. Since, we are comparing with other manufacturers these also are a HUGE step up from the HF "red handled" chisels that get fairly good reviews. These Benjamins Best are a bit more initially but since the HF set doesn't come with a bowl chisel it would end up being about the same cost. This Benjamins Best LCSIXW is really nice for the price. I am totally satisfied with the M2 HSS blades on these, they are nice and thick and hold an edge very well. The only weakness is that the handles aren't spectacular but they are serviceable and you could certainly turn your own handles and replace them if you chose. They actually have a nice feel to them but the fit and finish of the handles themselves isn't great. Again, more of a cosmetic issue than anything else.

I just recently got into wood turning and I enjoy it very much to say the least. The PSI 6 piece HSS turning set is a good addition to my shop. Pros: Includes the basics for all of the basic turning needs. Handles feel sturdy and are connected to the blade well. Blades are holding strong so far. Hold an edge well. Easy to grind a new edge with a grinder. Cons: Case is very cheap feeling. It came with a giant gash on the top of it, and to be nit picky, the hinges are on the wrong side. My Gouge blade seemed to be warped slightly. (I dont know if it is to be that way or if its defective.) Overall, the few minor problems are outweighed by its pros. It is a good set, includes all that youd need to get going, they feel sturdy and hold an edge well. And they are cheap to boot.

I was surprised at how well ground these center drills are. After checking the angles and how well centered the flutes are I was pleased I bought these. I like the fact they are individually packaged in plastic end mill sleeves and then heat sealed into one pouch. The grinding wheel that produced these bits was obviously well dressed and the relief was free of rolled edges and burrs. Well ground drills and a value in price. I say they compare favorably to any Polish or Asian produced center drills I've used at work in the past.

I looked at the various on-line dial indicators available and truly wanted a quality machinist product, but I'm retired and not running a jobshop now so after comparing prices, I decided saving money was more important than possibility of some small amount of lost accuracy. Since I have has the product, I have been quite pleased. If there are flaws, one would be the knurled knob used to tighten the dial gauge to the arm. It is a bit difficult. I added an aluminum extension so the portion used to twist and tighten is beyond the dial case. It could use a box also. Otherwise, I checked the accuracy with some of my machining equipment and it is close enough I can't find enough error to measure except when the gauge is close to fully depressed. There it had a repeat error within .0012 however. So, big deal. That's certainly acceptable. I did not find any of the difficulties as expressed by one of the people who claims the dial was difficult to position and the magnetic base twist lever weak. Regardless, those situations exists with the most expensive indicators. Remember, this is a precision instrument, not a hammer. Be gentle with it. To use it in truing a table saw, first check the blade for true and straighten that. Mine had a runout of .004, and that is acceptable. Then place the runout in a position where the dial indicator is least effected during the course of travel front to rear. I don't use the magnetic base, I remove the vertical post. It is threaded the same as the top hole in my miter gauge and I attach it there. I had no difficulty in getting the stem of the gauge close to the table with it mounted to the miter gauge, and was able to check my saw and found an error of only.003. That's close enough as heating/cooling alone creates more. I keep a piece of flat 1/8 stainless stock about 1/2x4.5 drilled each end to accept the gauge and magnetic arm. Using that as an extra, I add greater mobility to the gauge increasing the usefulness of it. I think it is well worth the price and the range of tips makes this quite useful. The arm is robust, the tightening handles firm, and while it is not the very slick (and very similar) $350.00 Starrett product we used in my shop, it suits my home needs quite well. Recommended

Go to Harbor Freight and spend 1/4 $$ on this piece of junk. The locking clamps have all cracked, and do not hold the dial in position after the first or second time I've tried to tighten them. The horizontal adjusting bar just twists because it was not welded onto the clamp. For a precision measuring tool, this is joke- do not waste your money! Also- it is impossible to remove the sticky "oil" coating this rust bucket was covered in during shipping.

This is a great little dial indicator with all you need to do some pretty fancy tool setups and measurements. The dial indicator alone is worth the price. The magnetic base and adjustment arms are just like the more expensive ones. I use mine to setup my jointer knives. Makes finding top dead center easy. Can be used alone to set the knives true or in conjunction with the Jointer Pal to speed things up. Also can be used to align the blade on your table saw parallel with the miter slot and fence. Glad I purchased it!

Essential tool for setting up most machine tools. I found it to be quite usefull.

For the price you can not beat this indicator its works just fine and like I said you can not beat the price. I TRYED
