Sharpening Demystified with Kirk DeHeer DVD Sharpening Demystified with Kirk DeHeer DVD

Reviews

Sharpening De Mystified a DVD by Kirk Deheer. This new video is dedicated to the wood turners who want to learn to sharpen or improve their sharpening techniques. In his DVD he covers the most common sharpening systems, freehand grinding, wolverine system with jigs, the Tormax sharpening systems. He covers the cutting edges and discusses sharpness vs. durability. Grit verses edge. Setting up the basic grinding system. Dressing the wheel. Setting the height of the grinder. Grinder accessories. Spindle roughing gouge, parting tool, skew chisel, the spindle master, the scraper, negative rake scraper, spindle and bowl gouges. The chapters cover free hand sharpening to chainsaw sharpening. Safety is not a second thought with Kirk as he masterfully demonstrates how to sharpen wood turning tools. Kirk also brings repeatability to sharpening edges and increase your turning time, not setup time for sharpening. This is a must have DVD for the turners tool box. This review is by Don McCloskey. This video is a true value at $24.95 and can be purchased from craft supplies, Amazon or kdeheer@cs.com.

I am a novice wood turner and I bought these tools for the price. Though I should have expected it, these tools were very cheap quality. I've had to regrind them two to three times on centered pieces. They chip and break easily, and my bowl gouge metal actually bent because it couldn't take the pressure of a centered piece of pine. I was very disappointed and am planning on buying a new set. Note that these tools are smaller than one would assume.

PSI Woodworking LCMINI2 Mini 5-Piece HSS Wood Lathe Chisel Turning Set Good quality product for the price. More expensive and maybe better chisels are out there, but for the hobbiest, these tools are more than adequate. In a nice wooden box, these chisels feel good in the hand, and make turning enjoyable.

This is one of the best tools sets that I have ordered and put to work. The wooden storagecase is very nice and built well.

I couldn't beleve the quality of these turning chisels..! The only reason I used a stone on the edge is because I can't be satisfied till I put in My own touch, I'd strop a Bic Razor if I could get it back together..! Serious tools..JusT GreaT...! Yup - You won't be disappointed..! G-G

I see similar 5 piece "mini" tool sets nearly identical to this one, selling for much higher (Sorby, Delta, etc). I have never been able to find any difference between them. These "name brand" tools sell for $125 and higher. And for what? The name on the label? These PSI tools are a great deal, for the price.

Nice set of Chisels. I turn smaller items on a Jet lathe and use my smaller chisel set more. But the large chisels have worked well for bowls and smaller jobs as well. This set wasnt the most expensive or the cheapest out there, but the quality is good! For the average user this is a great set of chisels that will not disapoint.

I have just started turning wood, mainly bowls, and needed a couple tools in this set...mainly a small bowl gouge, decent parting tool and bowl scraper. I already had a similar roughing gouge included, so it's useful too. The skew chisel...probably just me...haven't got knack of it yet and I occassionally use the spindle gouge but already had one. Ok, that being said, I had no problems with the case being cracked...but don't care, as I don't keep the tools in a box...I keep them where I get to them fast. They seem to keep their edge a little less than the Sorby gouge I have, but not a huge difference here. All in all, a great set to get started, especially making bowls, though you really need a larger bowl gouge (1/2" min) to really be steady with making anything bigger than say 4" diameter bowl or so. As others have said, it's a great way to get started using the tools and deciding where to put extra money improving on any of them. Good example, is I'll definitely invest in a beefy scraper...no substitute for having a good heavy cross section to prevent vibration when reaching inside a bowl with a scraper. Aside from that..I'll probably continue to use these tools for quite a while, only having to invest in perhaps some unique items such as the curved vessel scraping/turning tools to get inside really well on vessels. Again...very good starting set, a good value.

Do not expect the box to make it thru shipping, Amazon could do a better job of packing but a little glue cures the box problem. Now the LATHE TOOLS are a very good beginners set. Quality tools good enough for getting into wood turning without spending $200 just to see if you like it. NOTE: They really do need to be honed to a fine edge.

These aren't quite Sorby's but heck one Sorby chisel could cost you what this whole set costs. Since, we are comparing with other manufacturers these also are a HUGE step up from the HF "red handled" chisels that get fairly good reviews. These Benjamins Best are a bit more initially but since the HF set doesn't come with a bowl chisel it would end up being about the same cost. This Benjamins Best LCSIXW is really nice for the price. I am totally satisfied with the M2 HSS blades on these, they are nice and thick and hold an edge very well. The only weakness is that the handles aren't spectacular but they are serviceable and you could certainly turn your own handles and replace them if you chose. They actually have a nice feel to them but the fit and finish of the handles themselves isn't great. Again, more of a cosmetic issue than anything else.

I just recently got into wood turning and I enjoy it very much to say the least. The PSI 6 piece HSS turning set is a good addition to my shop. Pros: Includes the basics for all of the basic turning needs. Handles feel sturdy and are connected to the blade well. Blades are holding strong so far. Hold an edge well. Easy to grind a new edge with a grinder. Cons: Case is very cheap feeling. It came with a giant gash on the top of it, and to be nit picky, the hinges are on the wrong side. My Gouge blade seemed to be warped slightly. (I dont know if it is to be that way or if its defective.) Overall, the few minor problems are outweighed by its pros. It is a good set, includes all that youd need to get going, they feel sturdy and hold an edge well. And they are cheap to boot.

Great starter set at a very affordable price. Literally don't need anything else to turn pens and wine stoppers.

Really nice little pen set for the price. The handles were a little rough on the finish and ink blemished on the stamping. The HSS steel is nice and sharp and the carry case is a positive. Overall i'm pleased with them.

Very usable set of Midi turning tools. They are a very nice size for pen and other small work. They were fairly sharp upon arrival, but like all edged tools would benefit from a good honing before use. Seem to hold an edge well, and the wooden box was a nice plus.

This product is simply excelent. The quality of the steel is excelent. I am amazed with the results.

The tachometer works as expected. I used it to confirm that the RPM of my snow thrower engine is running within in the ball park range. This is good. But it comes with a hard case, not the soft bag shown in the picture. I actually paid extra from this vendor to get the soft bag because I don't have a good impression of hard case. But I end up getting a hard case. I could have ordered it from a different vendor and save some money. They should change the picture or lower the price.

Turning Wood W/Richard Raffan Turning Wood W/Richard Raffan

Reviews

This is a well written, well organized, wonderful book from a very gifted author. Great for someone just getting into wood turning and has pearls for the experienced turner. Highly recommended !!

This book is great for a novice like me. I am just getting started - returning- to wood turning and this book has helped me get up to speed. The pictures and text go together very well and the book covers lots of different types of projects.

I very likely own every book and DVD Richard Raffan has put out. I admire his work, with its pure and flowing form. And I'm often astonished, when watching him, with his displays of technique that makes things I still find challenging look easy. I do have one problem with most of the books and a few of the DVDs - while there is considerable information in them the overall level is a bit beyond complete beginner. It helps a good deal, for example, if one has actually attempted several boxes under someone's tutelage before attempting to make one straight from Raffan's instructions. I don't believe that this is Raffan's fault, but rather a problem of photographing or drawing the dynamic actions of the turner. I find that I get the most out of these resources when I already understand the basics. Truth would have it, there are very few books that will turn a beginner into a turner. This is a hobby where apprenticeship really pays off. Turning Wood is the exception to this rule. Not only is the text quite clear, but there are countless photographs and drawings that actually capture the techniques and approaches. Raffin focuses on technique, which is fine, but I wish he had spent even more time discussing design. For that I suggest you take a look at Turning Boxes, another of his best books. But from a how to viewpoint, there is not better book. I would suggest making a point of acquiring this book. It will help you develop good habits early instead of having to unmake bad ones. From here you can branch out in any direction of the myriad the lathe has to offer and know that you have what it takes to accomplish what you want. Next to having a teacher this will be your best resource.

An excellent book for the beginner to the art of woodturning. It is an invaluable item to have alongside the lathe

I ordered this book following rave reviews on other sites. I have to say I am not disappointed. The way Raffan teaches is simple and to the point. This book should be considered a bible for woodturners.

Turning is a special brand of woodworking. Only a lathe and a few cutting tools are needed to shape pieces of wood into delicate pieces of sculpture or practical household objects. Considered the turning primer, Raffan's book covers all the basics, from tools to techniques...

Segmented Wood Turning (Schiffer Book for Woodworkers) Segmented Wood Turning (Schiffer Book for Woodworkers)

Reviews

This book really takes the mystery out of making an open segment vessel. My first attempt came out great thanks to having read this book.

This book is well written and targeted specifically towards Open Segmented Turning. If that is what you're after than this will be a valuable addition. Tim

I was intrigued by the possibility of turning a bowl with "holes" in it, so I purchased this book. Mostly out of curiosity... "How do they do that?" was my question. This book shows the process in very helpful steps with good pictures and jig ideas. It's not my "go-to" book for wood turning by any means, because the open segmented style is not my favorite. But I do intend to add some of these elements to my turning over time. I'm glad I bought the book.

I was fortunate enough to see a live demo that the author gave at my turning club's meeting. Prior to that, I hadn't had much interest in open-segmented turning. It's not that I didn't think it was interesting, I just didn't think I had the equipment needed for such precise work, or the patience or time needed to devote to it. But seeing Bill's work, as well as seeing how easy he makes it to do this type of work, changed my mind completely! I immediately bought a copy of his book (which is a steal considering the detail he put into it, and how well written it is!) and set about making my first piece, following the example he includes in the book. My friends and family were amazed when they saw this first piece and encouraged me to do more of them! And I couldn't believe how easy it was to do. My hat is off to Bill. He's a great demonstrator, and does a phenominal job putting that skill into words and pictures. This book is a must own for any turner! Be sure to check out the author's website: http://www.smithart.us to learn more about Bill and his work.

This book is very well written and easy to understand. It is the book I recommend to anyone just getting into segmented wood turning. William takes the reader through jig making to final product in a down to earth approach to the subject.

New Masters of Woodturning: Expanding the Boundaries of Wood Art New Masters of Woodturning: Expanding the Boundaries of Wood Art

Reviews

This is art in it's most creative form. This what happens when the best lathers (from around the world) get a hold of the most beautiful woods. This is cutting edge art with no rules. I don't think the book was written for you to ape the examples. The reader will formulate a design of their own, or just drool, thinking that their brain is a pea. This book introduces we dullards to the gods of wood.

I enjoyed this book, it has excellent photos. However, it should be titled THE NEW MASTERS OF WOODCARVING. Turning has very little to do with the pieces in the book. The focus is more on carving, painting and decorating. Do not buy this book if you are looking for items that may be produced from a lathe only.

This is a fabulous book. The photography is excellent, and it gives you ideas if you are an advanced artist just what can be done. I do gourd carving, so am looking at this book for ideas on carving gourds. Highly recommend for pictures alone.

A great source of inspiration for woodturners of all levels. Great photography in this one. A must for the turners shelf or coffee table.

I loved this book. I do not do any woodworking but I like to work with gourds. This book gave me so many new ideas for crafting and carving gourds. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in arts and crafts. This book was so inpirational. And the price was fantastic.
