Wood Lathe
Woodworking lathes are the oldest variety. All other varieties are descended from these simple lathes. An adjustable horizontal metal rail - the tool rest - between the material and the operator accommodates the positioning of shaping tools, which are usually hand-held. With wood, it is common practice to press and slide sandpaper against the still-spinning object after shaping to smooth the surface made with the metal shaping tools.
There are also woodworking lathes for making bowls and plates, which have no horizontal metal rail, as the bowl or plate needs only to be held by one side from a metal face plate. Without this rail, there is very little restriction to the width of the piece being turned. Further detail can be found on the woodturning page.

PSI Woodworking CJAWFJ2 Jumbo Flat JawsReviewsThe product was delivered well before the expected delivery date and works exactly as advertised. I am very pleased with this product and look forward to many years of usage. My first project using the CJAWF12 was a success and I have already thought of new ways to use this device. These say that they fit all "C" Series Chucks so I ordered a set for my NOVA G3 Chuck from TEKNATOOL, that is supposed to be a "C" Series chuck. After cleaning all the oil and crud off of them I found that the mounting screw holes are too small for the mounting screws and they have a grove in the back where it needs a ridge or key to fit the locating grove in the hard jaws of the chuck. So this makes them bass ackwards for what I needed. So if your looking for a cheaper set of jaws for your TEKNATOOL NOVA G3 Chuck, DO NOT BUY THESE. After seeing these I still wouldn't want them even if they did fit my chuck do to the gaps in the diameters that they will chuck on. The jaws work well within their limits. I have finished the bottoms of several bowls on them and none of them have escaped despite my ham-handedness. My only complaint is that (to me) a jumbo bowl is bigger than 8". 10" would be great, 12" awesome. I am considering looking into making fatter pins to expand the holding size for inside grips. I never would have thought when buying this product that it would be designed with gaps in the inside and outside diameters of items it can grip. When turning my first hollow cylinder, I found that by moving the threaded pegs from one setting to another that neither setting would hold my project -- one setting slightly too big and the smaller setting slightly too small. This is taking into consideration the maximum adjustment using the Barracuda 2 chuck. The threaded holes in the jaw plates are spaced far enough apart that it creates these gaps. These jaws are built solid and are useful when cleaning up the foot of a bowl. Be careful when turning a bowl's foot to make sure you do not knock the item out since it it only gripped by the rubber feet. I have had the feet slip, causing black marks to be left on light wood. PSI Woodworking LCMINI2 Mini 5-Piece HSS Wood Lathe Chisel Turning SetReviewsI am a novice wood turner and I bought these tools for the price. Though I should have expected it, these tools were very cheap quality. I've had to regrind them two to three times on centered pieces. They chip and break easily, and my bowl gouge metal actually bent because it couldn't take the pressure of a centered piece of pine. I was very disappointed and am planning on buying a new set. Note that these tools are smaller than one would assume. PSI Woodworking LCMINI2 Mini 5-Piece HSS Wood Lathe Chisel Turning Set Good quality product for the price. More expensive and maybe better chisels are out there, but for the hobbiest, these tools are more than adequate. In a nice wooden box, these chisels feel good in the hand, and make turning enjoyable. This is one of the best tools sets that I have ordered and put to work. The wooden storagecase is very nice and built well. I couldn't beleve the quality of these turning chisels..! The only reason I used a stone on the edge is because I can't be satisfied till I put in My own touch, I'd strop a Bic Razor if I could get it back together..! Serious tools..JusT GreaT...! Yup - You won't be disappointed..! G-G I see similar 5 piece "mini" tool sets nearly identical to this one, selling for much higher (Sorby, Delta, etc). I have never been able to find any difference between them. These "name brand" tools sell for $125 and higher. And for what? The name on the label? These PSI tools are a great deal, for the price. PSI Woodworking CSC3000C Barracuda Wood Lathe Key Chuck SystemReviewsGreat chuck! I use my lath to turn pens and was using a drill press to bore holes in my blanks. When this baby showed up my quality and waste improved considerably. Must have for any lathe owner! Nice drill chuck wouldnt hurt either. Recomendation: BUY IT NOW Nice finish, I like the look better than the gold model. Good grip on wood, however, I would rather have dovetail jaws as the design of the PSI supplied jaws produce lines on wood. Nice unit if you don't plan to use it very long. I wore mine out in 2 years .The gears are cheap. It works great on the lathe. One can do many more things with this chuck. This is an excellent product and quite reasonalby priced compared to other similar products. I have used it a number of times and it is solid and well built. Average Rating:![]() |

Professional Laser Photo Tachometer - Accurate Digital RPM MeasurementsReviewsThe tachometer works as expected. I used it to confirm that the RPM of my snow thrower engine is running within in the ball park range. This is good. But it comes with a hard case, not the soft bag shown in the picture. I actually paid extra from this vendor to get the soft bag because I don't have a good impression of hard case. But I end up getting a hard case. I could have ordered it from a different vendor and save some money. They should change the picture or lower the price. Average Rating:![]() |

The Art of Turned Bowls: Designing Bowls with a World-Class TurnerReviewsIn my opinion, this is the best book from this author. I have most of his books. The information on turning wet wood is excellent. It is filled with great examples of work from many turners. This was not written as a book for technique as the title suggests, but a book on how to develop good design with loads of examples. A very worthwhile purchase. As my turning skills grow I realize that I'm weak in the area of design. I have a hard time knowing what will look good in a finished piece, so I was looking for a book to help me understand the principles of design as they relate to turning. This book was exactly what I needed. I now keep it in my shop next to the lathe so I can refer to it directly. It was everything I hoped it would be. Richard Raffin is famous around the world both for his skill at a lathe and as a teacher of woodturning, and this book expresses both beautifully. Profusely illustrated, Raffin covers every aspect of woodturning design, with special reference to bowls. No other book I know explains how to achieve good design, with nearly so much clarity and detail. Raffin explains how to find, select and prepare wood for turning, how to use and control wood shrinkage, what constitutes good shape and proportion, how to make rims and bases work aesthetically, how to handle detailing and decoration, and much, much more. This is not a regular how-to book, as there is not a single project described, and there is nothing here about tool use. What Raffin explains here, that few other teachers explore in nearly as much detail, is specifically the DESIGN of the woodturned object. There is SO MUCH well-turned, otherwise BAD work out there! It is so true that if the design is good, nothing else matters quite as much, but if it is bad, no amount of technical skill will produce a desirable object. Design is the single most important aspect of woodturning. Woodturners who want to do very good work MUST read this book. Almost every book on turning has the "how to use a gouge" section... but where do you go when you need to figure out "why" instead of "how"? You go here. Instead of focusing on the technique of turning, Richard Raffan looks at what makes a bowl you want to buy, use, hold, and cherish. How to compare a hit to a "just missed". He starts with the golden rectangle and moves on to curves and proportions, variations in wall thickness, and how they all relate to make a pleasing finished product. There is still a lot of "how-to", but it focuses on trees (cutting blanks to get the result you want), fitting grain to design, ornamentation (paint, finish, etc.) rather than the basics. The author's three previous books are available as a boxed set; I think this book is every bit as indispensable and should be included in the set. In the long run, this book will probably take me further as philosophy of design becomes more important than mastery of technique. World-class turner Richard Raffan provides a fine guide to turning bowls in his ART OF TURNED BOWLS, a tutorial teaching bowl design and longevity of product. The focus is on creating lovely shapes and wood which continues to delight as it changes and ages: first published as TURNED-BOWL DESIGN in 1987, this new edition has been completely updated with new information and color photos. Any woodcrafting library needs this. Average Rating:![]() |

When first published in 1987, "The Art of Turned Bowls" was a work ahead of its time. Now, considering the resurgence in popularity of this woodworking genre, the book is perfectly poised for rediscovery... |

The Art of Segmented Wood Turning: A Step-by-Step GuideReviewsI had no idea what I was getting into when I purchased this book. I'm sure it is great instruction for advanced turners who have completed many segmented projects. If you are new to segmented turning "this is not the book for you" It would not be fair to the Author to rate this book poorly, although I do believe some indication of its advanced nature should be noted in the description. I'll put this book on the shelf and find a book that really explains segmented wood turning for the beginner. Book was not what I had expected as advertised. Would not buy it if I had a chance to see it before purchased, for me personally a big letdown. The Art of Segmented Wood Turning by Malcolm Tibbetts.Good book-very helpful-fast delivery. Will use often. This is a great book on segmented wood turning covering all aspects from design and form to making tools to help facilitate assembly. Much better than others I have read. This book was purchesed for help on segmenting pepper-mill blanks. The book focuses on bowls amd vases. However I did learn about many general issues related to segmenting; wood selection, glues, orientation of wood, etc. I recommend this book for anyone interested in any form of segmenting. The author has done a great job of communicating his skills. Average Rating:![]() |

Turning Wood W/Richard RaffanReviewsThis is a well written, well organized, wonderful book from a very gifted author. Great for someone just getting into wood turning and has pearls for the experienced turner. Highly recommended !! This book is great for a novice like me. I am just getting started - returning- to wood turning and this book has helped me get up to speed. The pictures and text go together very well and the book covers lots of different types of projects. I very likely own every book and DVD Richard Raffan has put out. I admire his work, with its pure and flowing form. And I'm often astonished, when watching him, with his displays of technique that makes things I still find challenging look easy. I do have one problem with most of the books and a few of the DVDs - while there is considerable information in them the overall level is a bit beyond complete beginner. It helps a good deal, for example, if one has actually attempted several boxes under someone's tutelage before attempting to make one straight from Raffan's instructions. I don't believe that this is Raffan's fault, but rather a problem of photographing or drawing the dynamic actions of the turner. I find that I get the most out of these resources when I already understand the basics. Truth would have it, there are very few books that will turn a beginner into a turner. This is a hobby where apprenticeship really pays off. Turning Wood is the exception to this rule. Not only is the text quite clear, but there are countless photographs and drawings that actually capture the techniques and approaches. Raffin focuses on technique, which is fine, but I wish he had spent even more time discussing design. For that I suggest you take a look at Turning Boxes, another of his best books. But from a how to viewpoint, there is not better book. I would suggest making a point of acquiring this book. It will help you develop good habits early instead of having to unmake bad ones. From here you can branch out in any direction of the myriad the lathe has to offer and know that you have what it takes to accomplish what you want. Next to having a teacher this will be your best resource. An excellent book for the beginner to the art of woodturning. It is an invaluable item to have alongside the lathe I ordered this book following rave reviews on other sites. I have to say I am not disappointed. The way Raffan teaches is simple and to the point. This book should be considered a bible for woodturners. Average Rating:![]() |
