Metal Lathe
In a metalworking lathe, metal is removed from the workpiece using a hardened cutting tool, which is usually fixed to a solid moveable mounting called the "toolpost", which is then moved against the workpiece using handwheels and/or computer controlled motors.
The toolpost is operated by leadscrews that can accurately position the tool in a variety of planes. The toolpost may be driven manually or automatically to produce the roughing and finishing cuts required to turn the workpiece to the desired shape and dimensions, or for cutting threads, worm gears, etc. Cutting fluid may also be pumped to the cutting site to provide cooling, lubrication and clearing of swarf from the workpiece. Some lathes may be operated under control of a computer for mass production of parts .

TURNING PROJECTS WITH RICHARD RAFFAN / DVDReviewsI've just bought my first lathe, and I'm absolutely a beginner. There's no way that I could duplicate what Richard Raffan accomplishes in these dozen-or-so projects, as he makes all of them look easy. This DVD, however, makes me want to learn how. Wow, he turns items fast! In only a few minutes, he makes a trivet, a top, a spindle with rings. It's inspiring. The instruction is also top notch. The camera person did an excellent job at showing every step with the right amount of detail, and Raffan explains everything clearly. AND with humor; he's a funny guy, and I'd be happy to hang out with him anytime. (Actually, he reminds me of the technomage from the Babylon 5 and Crusade TV shows.) Arguably, as a beginner I should be paying attention to the how-to-start videos. But this one -- in addition to giving me several examples with which I'll soon be able to practice -- also shows me where I'm headed. Excellent stuff; I wish every how-to video were this well done. There's no end to the splendid variety of useful objects you can turn once you see Richard Raffan at his lathe. Among the projects Raffan shows you how to turn are hollow vessels, bottle coasters, spatulas, mallets, small bowls, and beads. |

Metal Spinning Workshop "The Four Basic Shapes"ReviewsA+++++ DVD. The DVD was extremey helpful and educational. The techniques were well described and demonstrated. Can't wait for Part 2!!!!! Great product ,Save me time and money trying to teach other offer a great after sale support on is metal spinning goup ! Bazz for 4 months i tried to work with Terry on getting the 2nd disk to play but apparently he lost interest in trying to make this work. i finally gave up too -- very disappointed I must admit i was a bit cautious purchasing this dvd - but boy is it worth it. There is so much information - it is definetly worth the money. I am a wood turner and am looking into broadening my horizons(aka metal spinning). After watching the DVD i was extrelemy impressed with his skill and furthermore his explanation of the craft. Terry does a great job of making you feel like you CAN really do it! I have already watched it a dozen times and still find something new to learn every time. I have even incorporated metal spinning pieces into my wood turning. A must buy! Great Job Terry! The metal spinning workshop DVD (part one) set is easily the best educational product on the subject of spinning metal. I bought the DVD just after it was released in April 2005 and have watched it at least 15 times, each time learning something new. Nearly 90% of the video covers new and valuable subjects for beginners and experienced craftsmen, which you will not find in any book available on the subject. Written & produced by a life long professional metal spinner the information is not only educational it's entertaining. Terry Tynan was the first to produce a DVD on the subject and he was also the first to start a Q&A Internet forum solely dedicated to the craft. Believe me $39.99 for this DVD is nothing compared to the money you will save after watching it. Cant wait for part two. Average Rating:![]() |

Professional Laser Photo Tachometer - Accurate Digital RPM MeasurementsReviewsThe tachometer works as expected. I used it to confirm that the RPM of my snow thrower engine is running within in the ball park range. This is good. But it comes with a hard case, not the soft bag shown in the picture. I actually paid extra from this vendor to get the soft bag because I don't have a good impression of hard case. But I end up getting a hard case. I could have ordered it from a different vendor and save some money. They should change the picture or lower the price. Average Rating:![]() |

Dividing by Harold Hall explains how radial work on a metalworking lathe, such as the cutting of gear wheels or the drilling of holes on a set radius, calls for a method of precisely spacing the cuts. The principles underlying this aspect of engineering are explained in depth in this book. |

The Mini-Lathe (Workshop Practice)ReviewsI bought the book from the Brittish publisher, via Amazon. com, after my minilathe was delivered. I was expecting a modern book on the subject, that could teach me how to better use my unit, which was bought in the USA, via Amazon. What I found was a book where the first two chapters were ok, the rest a mixture of old parts and new ones. As many other sources on minilathes, this book doesn't cover the tailstock in detail. The book should not be considered a "teaching tool" on how to operate a minilathe. I recommend this book to people that are about to buy a minilathe, and expect a "ready-to-work" unit. The information Mr. Fenner gives can be easily found navigating the internet using "minilathe" as the subject. There are a lot of links, each one somehow different from the other. I've only read the first few chapters. I'll have to revisit this book after going through an introductory type manual. It assumes a lot of background. although a small book it has all the knowledge you need to make what you need. The book goes over all the basics of usage and parts of the lathe. At the price I got the book at, I highly recommend this informative book. Average Rating:![]() |

The Mini-lathe has become the best-selling item of machinery in the hobby engineering market - often purchased as a first step by beginners to the hobby. For many years Myford lathes were considered as 'standard issue' for model engineers, but at about one-twentieth of the price of a new Myford, these new Mini-lathes set the benchmark for the future... |
Metalworking lathes are commonly provided with a variable ratio gear train to drive the main leadscrew. This enables different pitches of threads to be cut. Some older gear trains are changed manually by using interchangeable gears with various numbers of teeth, while more modern or elaborate lathes have a quick change box to provide commonly used ratios by the operation of a lever.
The threads that can be cut are, in some ways, determined by the pitch of the leadscrew: A lathe with a metric leadscrew will readily cut metric threads (including BA), while one with an imperial leadscrew will readily cut imperial unit based threads such as BSW or UTS (UNF,UNC).
The workpiece may be supported between a pair of points called centres, or it may be bolted to a faceplate or held in a chuck. A chuck has movable jaws that can grip the workpiece securely
